Alpha at Penrallt

We hope to run our next Alpha course in the autumn. Please contact the church office if you would like to be notified when we have further details.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a chance to make friends. To relax, chat, have fun, have a meal with people you agree with and people you disagree with but who, like you and I, are unsure what life is all about. Alpha gives us all an opportunity to think about God, to find out what Christianity is all about and to decide if it is relevant to you and me.

Here is a taster of what Alpha is all about:

Alpha begins with food

Alpha runs for about 12 weeks and each session starts with a meal. There is no charge for the Alpha course. If you feel unhappy being fed for free each week then we suggest making a donation to a local Foodbank.

What else happens in an Alpha session?

After the refreshments, we will listen to a film produced by the UK Alpha team and then we talk about the topics raised. We may split into smaller groups so that everyone can have their say. We must all feel free to say what we really think, but to friends! Nothing is too simple and many questions do not have an easy answer.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for everyone! Millions, if not tens of millions of people have joined an Alpha course over the past 20+ years. Thousands of churches of every type and denomination have hosted Alpha. Alpha is for everyone and that includes you, particularly if you want to investigate Christianity for the first time; are new to a church and want to discover what it is all about; thought you were a Christian but have forgotten why you believe; or simply are just puzzled by life, wonder if there is a God and are looking for friends who might help.

Note that our Alpha course is aimed at adult guests, but we are considering running another Alpha for young people.

What does Alpha discuss?

Any question is acceptable when we chat amongst each other and sometimes no-one has an answer. Here are the titles of the films that will prompt the discussions:

  • Is there more to life than this?
  • Who is Jesus?
  • Why did Jesus die?
  • How can I have faith?
  • Why and how do I pray?
  • Why and how should I read the Bible?
  • How does God guide us?
  • Who is the Holy Spirit?
  • What does the Holy Spirit do?
  • How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
  • How can I make the most of the rest of my life?
  • How can I resist evil?
  • Why and how should I tell others?
  • Does God heal today?
  • What about the Church?

Most of these topics are covered in our weekly Alpha sessions, but we also have an away-day on a Saturday in the middle of the course, at which several topics are covered.
